Tuscany of English grape growing, the south-west, south and south-east, the weather was unusually kind to wine growers for a change. From a rather late start the summer was exceptionally unusually warm and dry but not arid. As a consequence, the grapes ripened up to a month earlier than normally and though quantities were not exceptional quality was - some English winemakers have said that it was "the Vintage of their lifetimes". English viticulture and winemaking has get a fairer chance than usual to demonstrate just how good English wines can be - and not only the traditional still white wines, but also sparkling wines that can stand comparison with the best that Champagne can muster, and an increasing production of red wines.
